It Ends With Us is the first part of the series. Let’s discuss it’s summary.

The beginning

This book starts with Lily Bloom, the female protagonist standing on a rooftop building after giving a speech at her father’s funeral. The father with whom she has an estranged relationship. There she meets Ryle Kincaid, the handsome stranger with whom she has a heart-to-heart conversation on the rooftop.

The conversation continues with Lily sharing her hard feelings about her abusive father and Ryle admitting his opinion about love and preference for casual flings. They both instantly get attracted to each other, but nothing happens, and the meet-up ends there.

Fast forward to six months later, we are introduced to Lily again, who is preparing for the opening of her flower shop in Boston. With a coincidental encounter, Lily meets Allysa, whom she hires to work in her shop. Later with the unexpected entry of Ryle, it is revealed that Allysa is Ryle’s sister.

The bond between Lily and Ryle starts to grow, and despite Ryle’s disinterest in love commitments, he confesses and agrees to be in a relationship with Lily.

The Crux

In between the present story, we are taken back to the past life of Lily through the journals she has written in her childhood. There we are introduced to Atlas Corrigan, a homeless boy and first love of Lily. Atlas was a lonely kid who had found shelter in Lily’s neighborhood, the empty house beside her home.

Lily instantly empathizes with Atlas and helps him with clothes, blankets, food, etc. Both attend the same school, so their bond grows with time. However, Lily’s parents don’t know about Atlas, and she is scared to tell because of her father’s rage.

Lily’s father used to abuse her mother physically, which developed a feeling of hatred within her for her father. She felt helpless and shared her feelings with Atlas after the incidents. One day, Lily’s father accidentally caught Atlas in Lily’s room and beat him up badly, which resulted in him being hospitalized. That was the last time they both were together.

Back to the present, Lily sees the rage and abusive side of Ryle for the first time. However, she tries to understand the reason behind his behavior and accepts Ryle’s apology. Ryle, Lily, and her mother go for dinner in a restaurant, where she unexpectedly meets Atlas, her long-lost love. She was in a shocked state and didn’t mention this to anybody. Atlas is the owner of that restaurant and is a great chef.

Later she got married to Ryle in Vegas, and the initial days of their marriage were blissful. But suddenly, she faces another abusive side of Ryle which she eventually forgives in agreement with Ryle’s effort to control his anger from now on.

The End

But unfortunately, it didn’t stop, and Ryle’s angry actions resulted in Lily storming out of the apartment and going to Atlas for refuge. The already hurting Lily finds out she is pregnant and is shocked by this news. Atlas tries to comfort her and asks her to stay in his house as long as she is comfortable.

Ryle apologizes to Lily and leaves for England for three months. Lily clearly states that she will not make any decision about their relationship till the child is not born. After the birth of the baby girl, Lily asks for a divorce from Ryle. After a few months, she coincidentally runs into Atlas, and he hints at his feelings for her.

This is the end of the first part of the book series.

It Starts With Us starts with Lily and Atlas reminiscing about their encounter in the street and waiting for the other person to initiate a conversation. Lily is now a single mother handling her baby and the shop with the help of her mother and Allysa.

Lily loves her baby girl, Emerson, and is ready to fight for her till the last breath. Due to Ryle’s anger problem, she doesn’t allow him to be with Emerson alone at night. Ryle also loves his daughter and gets upset about his situation.

Atlas faces vandalism in his restaurant and tries to find the culprit. He discovers his stepbrother was trying to vandalize his place because he thought Atlas had abandoned him. Atlas is shocked to know he has a brother and tries everything in his power to protect him from his abusive mother and father.

On the other hand, Atlas and Lily’s relationship blooms. Ryle does not like the growing bond between Atlas and Lily and shows his dislike openly. Lily also faces his angry, abusive side in between this and is frustrated with Ryle’s behavior.

Lily finally accepts her discomfort openly to Ryle, asks him to take anger management classes, and must visit Emerson with supervision. Shockingly, Ryle accepts this condition as everybody turns against him due to his uncontrollable behavior.

Later, Atlas asks Lily to move in with him officially, which she accepts happily. After a few months, they both get married; therefore, the story ends with a happily ever after.
